TxDOT proposes Widening FM 2100, planning well received in Huffman

HUFFMAN – A Public Meeting hosted at Hargrave High School by the Texas Dept. of Transportation (TxDOT) on Dec. 13 showed aerial photography and schematic plans for a proposed project corridor with TxDOT representatives and their study teams made available to answer questions as they receive comments on the project.

Currently, FM 2100 from Huffman Cleveland Road south to FM 1960 is about 4.5 miles long an exists as two lanes and six-foot-wide outside shoulders. The proposal is one 12-foot travel lane and one 15 foot outer shared-use lane in each direction with sidewalks on both sides.

The proposal mostly stays within existing right of ways and would only require about 29 acres of additional right of way for drainage, corners and accommodation of the approaches to the Luce Bayou bridge. Once begun the project would take about three years and the cost is estimated at about 50 million. That fact seemed appealing to most of those commenting on the proposal on Dec. 13.

Crosby Church’s Huffman Campus is just south of a proposed major detention pond.

The increasingly crowded conditions on FM 2100 north of FM 1960 in Huffman have presented safety concerns not only concerning the 28 vehicle collisions that have occurred this year but this project is inexorably related to the dividing of FM 2100 south of FM 1960, although not stated at the meeting. According to P.I.O. Danny Perez the project of course awaits funding as does the proposal for south of FM 1960.

The proposed could begin as soon as the later part of next year but few would expect to see work begin before 2018. The two sections would await the final section that would go north of Huffman Cleveland Road to the Grand Parkway.
