Goose Creek CISD has selected a name and mascot for the high school under construction
Goose Creek Memorial High School was chosen as the name for the third high school during the Aug. 27 meeting of the districts Board of Trustees.
The name for the school, which is being constructed at 3401 North Main St., was chosen after a detailed selection process during which Board members pared down over 30 nominations submitted by community members.
The next evening, a committee of students and parents participated in another selection process to recommend the mascot and colors for Goose Creek Memorial. On Aug. 29, the Administration accepted the committees first choice of Patriots for the schools mascot, along with the school colors of red, black and silver.
The Administration is happy to support the committees top-ranking recommendations for the mascot and school color scheme for Goose Creek Memorial High School, said Dr. Barbara Sultis, GCCISD superintendent. We really appreciate the participation of the many citizens who submitted nominations for the name of the school as well as the students and parents who participated in the process of choosing the mascot and school colors. This is an exciting time in Goose Creek history.
Im extremely excited about the decisions made by the committee regarding the mascot and school colors, said Al Richard, GCCISD director of student services, who will be the first principal at the new school.
The Patriot is a fitting mascot for Goose Creek Memorial High School, and the combination of colors will look great on our athletic team and music group uniforms. The selection process worked well, and we had a lot of positive input from all of our committee members as they ranked their choices for mascots and colors.
The committee included 15 students who reside in the possible attendance zone for the new high school, including representatives of Ross S. Sterling High School, Highlands Junior School and Gentry Junior School.
Parents on the committee represented the Instructional Leadership Teams and Parent-Teacher Organizations of the three schools, which include students who will be rezoned to Goose Creek Memorial in two options being considered by the Board.
Public forums on junior school and high school rezoning options will be held on Sept. 20 at Lee High School and Sept. 25 at Sterling High School; both forums will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditoriums.
Goose Creek Memorial High School will open in the fall of 2008 as a projected 4-A high school serving approximately 1,300 students in grades nine through 11.
After the first year, the school will have students in grades nine through 12, with the first senior class graduating in 2010. Projected enrollment for Memorial High School is 1,700 for the school year 2009-2010.
