HIGHLANDS After the devastating tornadoes that ripped through several Southern states last week, the victims needed immediate help to survive. In a move reminiscent of the rescue aid that Highlands Rotary offered after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the local club sent a $2500 cash donation to one town it knew was in need, and organized a collection drive to send supplies and other necessities.
Working with Rotarians from Houston District 5890, Highlands Rotary is collecting blankets, clothing, food, water, toiletries, gift cards (Walmart), money, and childrens toys to be sent to the town of Hacklesburg, Alabama.
Rotarians Hugh Conway and Hurley Johnson are already there, helping and sending back unbelievable reports of the utter devastation. This is the town that President Obama visited, along with Tuscaloosa and others in Alabama. Conway reports that 150 of the 200 homes in Hacklesburg are destroyed. Temporary housing is being built as replacements. He also said that at least 5 Centerpoint crews from Houston are there, helping to restore electricity and water.
Locally, Rotary president Michelle Lomazoff is organizing the collection drive. Anyone wanting to help, is asked to bring goods or money to her shop, Its a Girl Thing, 524 N. Main Street, or call 281-426-3223 for help in picking up your donation.
