AUSTIN – Urgent to the education process is work on educating 6th through 8th Graders. On April 22 the Texas Senate added more legislation to keep students up with the nation as focus shifts on testing to determine proficiency in a year when less than expected students are yet returning to the classrooms. Updated TEA statistics have been released concerning Crosby Middle and Highlands Junior High. Both are remarkably similar and surprising in differences. Highlands Junior High has a student population of 1,185. The student population of Crosby Middle is 1,428.
In Highlands, 46% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 38% scored at or above that level for reading. At Crosby Middle, 60% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 39% scored at or above that level for reading.
Highlands’ minority student enrollment is 76%. The student-teacher ratio is 18:1, which is worse than that of the rest of the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District, (GCCISD.) Crosby’s minority student enrollment is 57%. The student-teacher ratio is 17:1, which is worse than that of Crosby ISD. All teachers at both schools are certified.
Highlands’ student population is made up of 50% female students and 50% male students. The school enrolls 62% economically disadvantaged students. There are 67 equivalent full-time teachers and 2 full-time school counselors. Crosby’s student population is made up of 49% female students and 51% male students. The school enrolls 51% economically disadvantaged students. There are 86 equivalent full-time teachers and 2 full-time school counselors.
Compared with GCCISD, the Highlands school did better in math and about the same in reading, according to this metric. In Goose Creek CISD, 38% of students tested at or above the proficient level for reading, and 43% tested at or above that level for math. However this junior high did worse in math and worse in reading in this metric compared with students across the state. In Texas, 44% of students tested at or above the proficient level for reading, and 47% tested at or above that level for math.
At Crosby Middle, 60% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 39% scored at or above that level for reading. Compared with all of Crosby Independent School District, the school did better in math and worse in reading, according to this metric. In Crosby ISD, 40% of students tested at or above the proficient level for reading, and 48% tested at or above that level for math.
Crosby Middle did better in math and worse in reading in this metric compared with students across the state.
Highlands has a Hispanic/Latino population of 55.5%. Crosby’s Hispanic/Latino population is 40.8%.
Highlands’ White population is 23.6%. Crosby’s White population is 42.6%.
Highlands’ Black or African American population is 14.1% and Crosby’s is 14%.
Highlands’ Asian population is 3.8% while Crosby’s is 0.5%.
In Highlands, those of two or more races are 2.8% Crosby’s 1.8%.
In Highlands, American Indian or Alaska Native make up 0.1% Crosby’s American Indian or Alaska Native populations make up 0.3%.
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander populations for both are 0.1%.
