WNBA #1 draft pick is Barbers Hill’s Charli Collier

The WNBA held their virtual player draft last week, and Barber’s Hill 2018 graduate Charli Collier was the #1 pick in the draft.

Now playing for the UT Longhorns, she helped lead them to the NCAA’s Elite Eight this past season.

After graduation, Charli will play for the Dallas Wings.

On hand for the draft ceremony were her mother, Ponda Collier who is a Math teacher at Barbers Hill High School, and brother Casey, a BHISD 2020 graduate who now plays football for USC.

Charli also credited her success to her late father, Elliott, who was her first basketball coach and inspiration. She carried a photo of him with her to the ceremonies.

Accompanying the family were Barbers Hill High School principal Rick Kana, former BHHS Girls Basketball Coach Tri Danley, and others from the BHHS staff.

Superintendent Greg Poole stated, “Charli is a winner in all things, and I am so proud that she is an ambassador for Barbers Hill.”

Principal Rick Kana said, “We are beyond proud of Charli and the things she has accomplished.” He continued, “She is a wonderful young lady and a role model for students of all ages. We know she is destined for great things, and we wish her every success.”
