Crosby loses playoff 55-54

CROSBY – The Crosby Cougars basketball team has put together an exciting season for its fans.

First it won the District 19-4A championship. Then, in their Bi-District playoff with Beaumont Central, the team won a nail-biter 58-55.

Playing the Brenham Cubs in the second round of the playoffs, the Cougars could not keep the magic flowing to the final buzzer, losing 55-54. The game-winning bucket came with just 34 seconds left in the game.

For most of the night the Cougars played catch-up with the Cub. Brenham opened the game with a 14-8 first quarter lead.

Crosby made adjustments in the second quarter and was able to regain the lead, taking a 28-24 advantage into halftime.

The Cubs came out quickly in the third quarter, tying the score at 28. Crosby kept it close and by the end of the third quarter trailed by one point at 40-39.

In the final quarter the Cougars could not build up a lead, with the Cubs maintaining a fine edge.

With 1:58 left in the game Kendrae Carter hit a three-pointer to tie the game. Carter led all scorers with 22 points.

A.J. Anderson also gave Crosby a boost with a late basket to pull them ahead 54-53.

Tyree Gaines, who scored four points for the entire game, pushed the Cubs ahead with 34 seconds to play. A pair of turnovers later and Crosby had one last shot with three seconds to play. The ball missed the mark and the Cougars’ season ended.
